The struggling Arrows team has secured the use of Supertec engines for next season.

Team boss Tom Walkinshaw announced the deal at Silverstone prior to the British Grand Prix, and admitted that the new engine should enable Arrows to compete on a more even footing than its own self-developed unit has this season.

"This contract with Supertec will give Arrows the opportunity to compete at the highest level," Walkinshaw said, "The Supertec engine has proved its competitiveness this year, and we are looking forward to working with Flavio Briatore and his team in 2000."

"Whilst our own Arrows V10 engine has made improvements in both speed and reliability for 1999, I believe that, to compete at the front of the grid, it is necessary to have an engine which has been developed by a major manufacturer."

The Arrows contract will provide Supertec with a second team for 2000, following the switch by two of its customers to other suppliers at the end of the current year. Williams takes up its works deal with BMW, and Honda replaces Supertec at British American Racing, leaving the former Renault engines to power just Benetton from its current line-up.
