Money is sure to be the deciding factor. Jordan has lost its former title sponsor DHL/Deutsche Post and is thought to be looking back to former title sponsor Benson and Hedges for further funding - and most agree that they'd like a British driver, indicating Irvine as a favourite, but others such as Bernoldi and Massa have considerable personal sponsorship at their disposal.

"In spite of intense media speculation concerning various drivers and their possible links with Jordan, the team has made no decision concerning either the second race seat or reserve driver," said a statement from the team.

"Eddie Jordan is concentrating on finalising sponsorship agreements prior to making any decisions or announcements regarding the driver line-up, so the stories linking the team definitively with certain drivers are rather wide of the mark," the statement added.

Jordan has yet to name its title sponsor for 2003, but has secured a supply of Ford V10's to replace the Honda power-plant's used last year.
