Alonso: F1 fans deserve refund after 'most boring race ever'

Fernando Alonso believes Formula 1 fans deserve to get back “a little bit of their ticket” following “the most boring race ever” on Sunday in Monaco.

Alonso qualified and started seventh in Monaco, and held position throughout the race before being forced to retire with 25 laps remaining due to an issue on his car.

Alonso was disappointed to lose the six points on offer for finishing seventh in Monaco, believing the results was “secure” given the lack of overtaking around the tight confines of the street circuit.

“I was P7 and secure, because here there is no overtaking. We lost a couple of good points today,” Alonso said.

“I don’t know exactly, something on the gearbox or something on the engine, but we lost power and we lost the sync of the gears.”

Alonso did not mince his words when summing up the race as a whole, calling it “extremely boring”.

“This is probably the most boring race ever, without a Safety Car, without yellow flags,” Alonso said.

“I think the sport needs to think a little bit about the show, because this is very disappointing.

“I think probably we need to give something to the fans at the end of the race to pay a little bit of their ticket back.”

All of the top six in Monaco finished where they started, with overtakes being few and far between during the race, but Alonso believes this is not a result of the wider cars now used in F1.

“No, I think it’s just Monaco. We know how it is,” Alonso said.

“We just start in our qualy position more or less and we run until the chequered flag in that position.

“Unfortunately we had the failure and we could not secure this seventh place and the points for the team, but hopefully next time we can finish.”
