Promoters for the Russian Grand Prix say they will be welcoming spectators to its round of the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship following confirmation of its round at the Sochi Autodrom on 25-27 September.

The 2020 F1 season got underway last weekend at the Red Bull Ring but is doing so for now behind closed doors with strict measures in place for the 4,000 or so personnel that are able to enter the circuit.

However, while F1 has said it is hoping to welcome back spectators as the season progresses, Russian GP promoters have gone ahead and said theirs will be in front of spectators and have begun selling tickets.

“Russia is ready to receive the Formula 1 teams and spectators,” Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. “The government will provide all the assistance required during the preparation and delivery of the competition.

“I would like to highlight the partnership approach of the organisers, Formula One Group, with which we have reached a mutually beneficial agreement on holding the Russian Grand Prix. Formula 1 is one of the most popular world-class international competitions. It will be an important event for Russian sport.”

The news may be greeted with some scepticism as Russia has become one of the hardest hit nations by the coronavirus, with concerns it isn’t reporting its figures accurately. Nonetheless, Alexey Titov, CEO of ANO and Rosgokni says it has every intention of welcoming guests to one of Russia’s largest annual sporting events.

“This will be an incredible festival for the widest audience possible. Eventful days in Russia’s resort capital await all the Sochi Autodrom guests. The event attendance remains at a good level year on year, and we are confident that the difficulties of this year will not become a special obstacle for motorsport fans. We are meticulously preparing to receive spectators safely and looking forward to seeing everyone in the Olympic Park.”

The Russian GP is one of two events confirmed for the 2020 F1 season together with a brand new event held at Mugello in Tuscany.
