There was only one man to watch yesterday [Monday] in the second round of the British F3 Championship and that was Sweeney Racing's Adam Carroll.

The teenager from Ulster made up for the disappointment of retiring from the Scholarship Class while leading Sunday with a resounding victory yesterday [Monday], made even more remarkable given he started the 20 lap race from the back of the grid.

Neither Carroll or his team-mate Billy Asaro, winner of round one on Sunday, were eligible to take the start in yesterday's race as they had failed to record times in qualifying and with the grid limited to 30 cars neither driver made the cut. Carroll did however become the first driver on the reserve list and needed cars to drop out if he was to race yesterday.

Luck was on Sweeney Racing's side and at the first start yesterday afternoon a collision involving the Fortec cars of Kovalaninen and Carbone as well as Mohammed Fairuz, meant that Carroll could enter the race, claiming the final position on the grid.

There was no holding back Carroll at the re-start and he had climbed to 21st by the end of the first lap. A brief period behind the safety car on laps four and five further aided Carroll's cause and at the green flag he raced on with his climb through the field, humbling several Championship Class drivers in the process. At mid-distance he was in 14th and lying second in class behind Clivio Piccione.

Closing the gap even further on the last lap Carroll duly claimed the Scholarship Class win as Piccione went off under pressure from the Sweeney Racing driver.

Carroll's win capped a dramatic debut weekend for Sweeney Racing with two victories for John Sweeney's F3 outfit. A win apiece for Asaro and Carroll was a fair outcome and both drivers will be back challenging for wins when the championship moves to Donington in a fortnight's time.

Carroll said: "I knew once I had made it into the race that the first few laps would be crucial. When the green lights came on I just nailed it. The safety car coming out on Lap 4 helped me a little and from then on I gritted my teeth and drove as well as I could. To come away with the win is brilliant, especially as we weren't sure we were even going to start the race."

John Sweeney, Team Principal added: "I'm absolutely thrilled to bits for Adam. What can you say? It's a great result not only for Adam but the whole team as well. This weekend really has been a story of highs and lows for us but to come away with two victories is absolutely fantastic - you just can't script weekend's like this!"
