Sargeant claims maiden F3 win to take points lead

Logan Sargeant took a maiden FIA Formula 3 victory at Silverstone to move into the points lead of the 2020 championship.

Sargeant converted his second straight pole position at the British Grand Prix venue into his first win in the series in comfortable fashion to overtake Prema teammate Oscar Piastri in the drivers’ standings.

The American finished over three-seconds clear of HWA Racelab’s Jake Hughes, who jumped Red Bull Formula 1 protege Liam Lawson on the run into Abbey at the start and just held onto the position.

Hitech Grand Prix driver Lawson completed the podium in third to claim his third rostrum appearance of the season. Lawson fended off the next highest-placed Prema of Frederik Vesti by half a second.

Championship frontrunner David Beckmann followed up his victory at Silverstone last weekend with a fifth-place finish for Trident, ahead of ART Grand Prix’s Theo Pourchaire.

Erstwhile championship leader Piastri limited the hit to losing the points lead of the championship by recovering from a nightmare P11 in qualifying to seal important points in seventh.

The Renault F1 junior finished ahead of Bent Viscaal, Carlin’s Clement Novalak and Lirim Zendeli, who claimed the final point on offer and reverse grid pole for Sunday’s second race at Silverstone.

A clash on the last lap between ART GP's Sebastian Fernandez and Jenzer's Matteo Nannini while they battled for position ended up with both drivers in the gravel at Stowe, but the incident did not require the intervention of the Safety Car.
