Suzuki's Superbike sensation Akira Ryo will take part in the season-opening Japanese GP at Suzuka on Sunday as the only Wild Card rider in the class.

Ryo will switch from his usual GSX-R Superbike to a factory-backed RGV500 Gamma, in the colours of Team Telefonica MoviStar Suzuki.

It will be the second time the current All-Japan Superbike championship runner up has taken part in a Grand Prix. The last time was in 2000 at the same event, when he qualified on the front row and finished tenth. During the off-season, Ryo tested a two-stroke GP bike like those ridden by factory riders Kenny Roberts and Sete Gibernau.

The fiery Japanese rider joined Suzuki in 1998 and has improved his results ever since. He finished third in his first year on a factory Suzuki in the All-Japan championship, and second for the next two years, riding a GSX-R750. Ryo also won a World Superbike Championship race in 1999.

Ryo is known for his quick bike-setting ability and combines natural talent with a professional approach. Very focused on winning, he is expected to re-adapt rapidly to the 500cc V-four two-stroke GP machine.

"I am really happy to be riding at the Japanese GP at Suzuka again," he said. "It is another chance to test myself against the best riders in the world, and I am grateful to Suzuki for the opportunity.

"Last year I finished tenth, with no regrets. It was a very enjoyable race for me.

"The All-Japan Superbike series is one of the most competitive in the world, and I am ready for this new challenge. I believe I can run with the riders at the highest level in the world this year - and I want to grow up more and add more to my racing."
