He was not satisfied with the performance of the bike today. But the team all agree that they must work harder tomorrow.

"Today we made changes to the (front) suspension from the last time we tested here on 20/21 March, which, unfortunately did not work," explained Ueda. "It went (the) wrong way. I did not get the feeling as good as last time. So, we must change for tomorrow!

"During the final session tomorrow I may not go for time attack though, I would rather work out the setting for the race day, I want to set myself a constant pace. By doing this I may be able to shorten the gap I had today or to go faster than them - we'll see.''

Meanwhile in the 250cc class Brit Stuart Edwards, who only signed for the team two weeks ago, faced an uphill struggle after being forced to use the first part of free practice to break-in his new 2001 RS250, which was only finished late last night.

Qualifying was therefore always going to be a struggle and ended early after a small problem with the primary gear.

The team had spent the day slowing making the machine more and more competitive, by making small changes at a time to learn the machine. However, Stuart ended the day slowest of all, but was not too unhappy given that the machine is a long way from its best.

"It was disappointing not finishing the session as the machine vibrated badly," said Edwards. "I chose to park the machine rather than ride it back to the pits and maybe cause damage, it turns out it was a small problem which has been fixed. I am just trying to learn the machine and the circuit and it will take time and that I have only had 2 hours on this machine. I just want a good day tomorrow to improve."
