An enthusiastic crowd warmed up for the new season by watching a select field of Elite and Premier League riders mark the occasion by racing on speedway machines from the vintage speedway era through to the modern day lay-down engines.

Robson coped the best with the different machinery and emerged on top of the pile with a dozen points, just one ahead of Stonehewer. Compton secured the final place on the rostrum when defeating Nigel Sadler in a run-off after both tied on ten points.

And 69-year-old former five time world champion Ove Fundin looked set to beat the 'slightly younger' Mark Loram in their match race. With both riders on vintage machines, Fundin lead the 2000 world champion all the way only to be a victim of a mechanical failure on the final bend.
