Paul Pickering has received a suspended ?1000 fine and eight meeting ban after riding down the Stoke track the wrong way in protest at an unsatisfactory start. Speedway Control Board officer Graham Reeve decided not to refer the matter to a disciplinary tribunal.

The incident happened in Stoke's home meeting against Sheffield on Saturday night when Pickering, apparently under the impression that the start of heat race in question was not all it might have been and expecting it to be stopped, turned around at the first corner and started to head back along the straight - but the wrong way.

But the referee hadn't stopped the race and the other three riders were quickly bearing down on the Stoke man from the "right" direction. Pickering said: "I'm very grateful to Graham Reeve for dealing with it so promptly. The matter is now closed as far as I am concerned."
