The Suzuka 8Hrs claimed its first victim in 23 years today, after a Japanese rider was killed in a high-speed crash.

The event, which features the great and good from both world superbikes and the grand prix scene, had survived 22 previous runnings without a fatality, but 47-year old Mamoru Yamakawa failed to respond to treatment after crashing into the air fence on lap 32.
