2007 World Supersport champion Kenan Sofuoglu has broken his left ankle in a motocross training accident in his home country of Turkey.

The 25-year-old, who holds the all time record for WSS race wins with 14 victories to his credit, could now miss out on vital testing time with the Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team.

"I do motocross three to four days a week during the winter to stay fit," Turkish website ajansspor.com reports Sofuoglu as saying, "but during training [on Sunday] my ankle twisted around. I felt something was broken so I went to hospital.

"Doctors have told me to keep my foot in plaster for [UPDATE: six weeks]. They did not see the need for surgery. The natural way will be the fastest.

"I would still like to take part in the official tests [the first of 2010 is at Portimao on January 22-24]. I'll see what the doctors say in three weeks' time.

"I've told my team manager the unfortunate news.

"Before the 2007 season I broke my wrist and was still champion. I hope for the same outcome this year," he added.

After an ill-fated move to World Superbike in 2008, Sofuoglu switched back to WSS for 2009 and won three races on his way to third in the championship.

Last season marked Ten Kate's first WSS title defeat since 2001.
