The second World Superbike race and World Supersport race at the Moscow Raceway has been cancelled, it has been confirmed.

The first World Superbike race ran to full distance despite rain worsening as it continued, but while the following World Supersport race did manage to get underway in fully wet conditions, a huge accident on the back straight during the opening lap prompted a red flag.

The announcement came in the wake of a horrifying accident for Go Eleven Kawasaki competitor Andrea Antonelli, the WSS rider who fell on the back straight and was struck by the unsighted Lorenzo Zanetti.

UPDATE:
It was later confirmed that Antonelli had succumbed to his injuries after suffering a fatal cranium base fracture. He was pronounced dead at 2.10pm local time.

The remainder of the event was cancelled as a mark of respect.
