Marco Melandri has marginally chipped into Jonathan Rea’s top time in FP2 at Imola to jump above Aruba.it Racing Ducati teammate Chaz Davies on the combined times.

The Italian rider produced the fastest lap of the second practice session with a 1m 47.150s to move within one-tenth of Rea’s best lap which was set during the morning session. Both Rea and Davies failed to improve on their outright top times, which saw the latter shuffled down to third behind teammate Melandri, while Rea held on to top spot thanks to his 1m 46.951s.

Lorenzo Savadori enjoyed the biggest gains in FP2 for Milwaukee Aprilia by moving up to fourth place on the combined times, less than two-tenths off of Davies in third, with Tom Sykes holding station in fifth for Kawasaki.

Jordi Torres moved up to sixth for MV Agusta with Xavi Fores falling to seventh for Barni Ducati.

Eugene Laverty passed his post-FP1 fitness check to be allowed to contest the full race weekend in Imola and ended the second session in eighth spot for Milwaukee Aprilia as Alex Lowes recovered from his earlier off to take ninth place for Pata Yamaha.

Puccetti Kawasaki wildcard Leon Haslam rounded out the top ten ahead of Pata Yamaha’s Michael van der Mark with Aruba.it Racing Ducati junior rider Michael Ruben Rinaldi shooting up to 12th late on.

Red Bull Honda’s Leon Camier also passed his FP1 fitness test to see him return to action alongside Jake Gagne with the British rider ending the session 16th overall one place ahead of his American teammate.
