Sunday World Superbike testing results at Portimao

Jonathan Rea has retained top spot on the timesheet at the end of the first day of pre-season testing at Portimao with Alex Lowes the nearest challenger.

Kawasaki’s Rea set a 1m 42.195s to top the times on the opening day at the Portuguese track, 0.419s faster than Lowes on the Pata Yamaha, while a late surge on the times by Alvaro Bautista on his debut at Portimao saw him climb to third place for Aruba.it Racing Ducati.

Kawasaki Puccetti’s Toprak Razgatlioglu continued to impress by ending the day fourth fastest ahead of factory BMW’s Tom Sykes, who preferred to focus on its extensive testing programme with the new S1000RR, while his team-mate Markus Reiterberger ended the day 12th respectively.

Leon Haslam maintained his adaptation back to WorldSBK with Kawasaki in sixth place ahead of Pata Yamaha’s Michael van der Mark, who suffered an early technical problem in the morning which triggered a red flag.

Marco Melandri and Sandro Cortese continued to get up to speed with GRT Yamaha ahead of both Team Go Eleven Ducati’s Eugene Laverty and Barni Ducati’s Michael Ruben Rinaldi on the times.

European pre-season testing concludes tomorrow at Portimao before the World Superbike paddock heads to Australia for the 2019 season-opener at Phillip Island on February 22-24.
