Rinaldi and Rea were the riders with the pace throughout as they immediately set sub 1m 40s lap times.

Rea was first to do so, but Rinaldi, who was following the six-time world champion come the pair’s third laps around, managed to pip the Kawasaki rider by just under a tenth.

It was an impressive start to race day for American Garrett Gerloff who slotted into third with just over four minutes remaining - a position he maintained through to the flag.

Since his coming together and crashes with several riders early in the year, Gerloff has been a shell of his former self, however, the speed has remained there on various occasions including this session.

Pole sitter for today’s double feature races, Toprak Razgatlioglu was seventh fastest, one spot ahead of team-mate Andrea Locatelli.

After missing Saturday’s Superpole qualifying and FP3 sessions, it has been confirmed that Lucas Mahias will miss the remainder of 2021 due to injury.
