Sofuoglu out of Magny-Cours round with triple fractured hip

World Supersport championship leader Kenan Sofuoglu has been ruled out of the Magny-Cours round after suffering three fractures in his hip in a nasty crash during Superpole qualifying.

The Puccetti Kawasaki rider had been battling for pole position in qualifying for the French race but tipped off in the flick back between turn eight and nine during Superpole 2. The session was red flagged immediately so the five-time World Supersport championship could receive immediate medical attention before being taken to the medical centre.

In a statement released by Puccetti Kawasaki it has confirmed Sofuoglu as unfit for the Magny-Cours race, which he qualified on the front row, after sustaining three fractures to his hip.

“Kenan was taken for medical checks at the circuit and was declared unfit. Later checks in hospital confirmed that he has three fractures to his hip,” the statement read. “He is now flying home to Turkey to undergo surgery.”

Sofuoglu will also be a doubt for the penultimate round of the 2017 campaign at Jerez with just three weeks to recover from surgery. The Turkish rider leads the World Supersport championship by four points from Lucas Mahias having won five of the past six races. Sofuoglu missed the opening two races of the season with a broken hand injury suffered while training during the pre-season.
