Haslam: We need to wrap up BSB title

Leon Haslam knows with a dominant 61-point lead ahead of the final round he ‘needs to wrap it up’ which will remain his primary focus amongst other goals for the triple-header at Brands Hatch to decide the 2018 Bennetts British Superbike championship.

12 months ago Haslam was favourite to seal the BSB title leading by 32 points going into the finale but lost out to Shane Byrne across the three races which climaxed with a horrible 172mph crash triggered by a mechanical issue during race three in which he broke a wrist, thumb and ankle.

Returning to the same round this year and with almost double the points advantage, Haslam remains focused on securing a maiden BSB title and knows if he concedes fewer than 12 points to RAF Regular & Reserves Kawasaki’s Jake Dixon he will secure the crown in Saturday’s opening race.

But rather than opting to rely on the mathematical situation, Haslam says he’s focusing on trying to win his first race on a Kawasaki at the Brands Hatch Grand Prix track to complete his campaign with a perfect result.

“I am looking forward to Brands Hatch and I honestly can’t wait now. I feel like we need to wrap it up and we are in a good position with the lead that we have, but I have a lot of objectives for the weekend,” Haslam said.

“The main one is obviously to win this championship, but the other is that I have never won on a Kawasaki at the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit. My first aim is to win the first or all three and then hopefully celebrate my first BSB title.”

Haslam is aiming to seal his first-ever professional title with the 2018 BSB crown before returning to the World Superbike championship next season with the Kawasaki Racing Team.
