Williams are understood to be keen to have the 36 year old Englishman as a replacement for Bruno Junqueira. ITV Sport reports that Herbert is considering the offer if he fails to get a competitive drive in the Champcar series in the United States.

Williams' offer follows Ron Dennis' praise of Olivier Panis - racer turned tester this season and the beneficial effect it has had on the team. The Frenchman's testing at McLaren has now earned him a BAR seat for 2001.
