Toyota duo Olivier Panis and Cristiano da Matta were third and fourth. Panis again the quicker of the two, as the former CART star continues to adapt to F1.

Panis, who was around a second up on da Matta, commented: "I continued to learn the team and the car today. We managed to improve the balance of the car and the overall lap time from yesterday's session with the priority on getting good reliability in the new engine and gearbox. We only had a gearbox problem right at the end of the session, but it has been a good day and we are heading in the right direction."

da Matta meanwhile, using the standard TF102, without next season's RVX-03 engine and seven-speed gearbox, completed 76 laps and was pleased with his progress. "Everything ran a lot better for me today," noted the 2002 CART Champ. "We were able to complete 76 laps of the track with no real problems.

"I had a little spin in the morning session when I ran a bit too deep, but it was nothing major. The overall feeling I have for the car is getting better all the time and my focus at the moment is to get as many kilometres under my belt as possible."

Fifth overall and still the only representative for British American Racing was Anthony Davidson. The BAR-Honda test driver again ran well, notching up 77 laps overall and posting a best time of 1m 20.231s.

Mark Webber meanwhile was way off the pace, as like yesterday when he only completed 3 laps, mechanical problems again kept him confined to the garage. He managed just 6 laps in total.

Testing continues tomorrow [Thursday].
