PICS: BMW Sauber sprouts antlers.

If McLaren's MP4-22 was compared, perhaps unkindly, to an overgrown anteater in 2007, BMW Sauber is running the risk of being saddled with something a little less attractive following its appearance on day one of the latest Valencia group test.

Not afraid to try radical aerodynamic devices, and with the promise of a revised bodykit to come before the opening race in Melbourne in March, the F1.08 took to the track with extra wins mounted atop its nose section. Although experimental at this stage, the addition was well-crafted, having been moulded as part of the nose, with elegant curves directing the airflow rather than the wings simply sticking out into it in an effort to deflect.

Nick Heidfeld was entrusted with providing feedback on the new system, running the sole F1.08 at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo while likely test driver to be Marko Asmer soldiered on with systems checks on the revised F1.07B. The German focused on various aerodynamic and suspension comparisons and, despite encountering some minor technical problems during his 80 laps running with a generally heavy fuel load, announced that it had been a productive day.

Asmer, who could be confirmed in the back-up role within weeks, recording the eighth best time of the day - three places ahead of Heidfeld - whilst running a limited programme that concentrated on systems checks and development of the mandatory ECU. The Estonian will step down today [Wednesday], handing the older car to Heidfeld, while Robert Kubica drives the F1.08.
