McLaren Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz has confirmed he has tested negative for coronavirus.

The Spaniard is currently taking part in a voluntary quarantine period as a precautionary measure after a member of the McLaren F1 crew contracted COVID-19 at the Australian Grand Prix.

Despite testing negative for the flu-like virus, Sainz will continue with his current self-isolation, which he admitted to being “a bit bored” of earlier on Tuesday.

McLaren withdrew from the season-opener in Australia following an outbreak of coronavirus in the Melbourne paddock, which ultimately resulted in the race being called off.

“After what happened in Australia, I needed to do the COVID-19 test and I am very happy because the results are negative,” Sainz said on Instagram.

“In reality it won’t change much, because I will continue in quarantine.”

Earlier this week, the Woking squad confirmed the member of its team that had tested positive was no longer showing symptoms of coronavirus, while revealing that the other 14 staff currently observing a self-isolation period are being supported by top McLaren personnel out in Melbourne.

The global spread of coronavirus has already had a huge impact on the 2020 F1 calendar, with F1 now targeting a May season start after the opening four rounds were postponed.

Further disruption is expected, with doubts over whether the Dutch and Spanish grands prix - both scheduled for early May slots - can be staged.
