Locatelli made a dramatic entry to World Championship racing in 1994 when he took pole position on his Grand Prix debut in the 125cc class at the Italian GP at Mugello as a wild-card rider at the age of nineteen. He entered the Grand Prix series full time in 1995 riding an Aprilia in the 250 class sponsored by Nastro Azzurro.

After 2 seasons in the 250 class, which were plagued by injury, he dropped down to ride a Honda in the 125 class, for the Axo racing Team in 1997 and then moved to the Team Polini for 1998. Locatelli moved to Aprilia for 1999 with the Vasco Rossi Racing Team taking his first ever GP win at the French GP at Paul Ricard.

After winning the 125 title in 2000 he returned to the 250 class last year scoring two podium finishes in another season affected by injuries. He joins 17 other current Grand Prix riders (including current absentee Alex Criville) who have made 100 starts or more. This includes Max Biaggi who is scheduled to make his 150th Grand Prix start at Suzuka.
