Australian Gerry Burgess,Valentino Rossi's Honda crew chief, was limping round the Suzuka paddock after having a very lucky escape with a chainsaw back home in Australia.

He was cutting some wood with a saw when it slipped and severed an artery in his left foot. He stemmed the flow of blood with his sweater and drove himself to the local medical centre. He was transferred to hospital where the cut was closed by 28 stitches.

He missed the Honda test at Suzuka last week but returned in time for the grand prix. He returns home next week to have the stitches removed before flying to South Africa for the next round of the Championship.

He promises to be a little bit more careful when handling dangerous machinery next time.
