Francesco Bagnaia completes a perfect Saturday by blasting to pole position by almost a half-a-second over Fabio Quartararo for the Spanish MotoGP at Jerez.

Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro will start from the outside of the front row in third, but a massive 0.763s from Bagnaia at a track normally known for ultra-close lap times.

Reigning champion Quartararo, propelled into the title lead by his and Yamaha's first victory of the season last Sunday in Portimao, stamped early authority on the session, but with Bagnaia just 0.073s adrift.

Fastest during FP3 and FP4, Bagnaia struck back in style, pulling a stunning 0.620s clear of the Monster Yamaha before the Frenchman trimmed it to 0.453s.

Bagnaia's factory Ducati team-mate Jack Miller will head row two, at a track where he won last season after Quartararo's arm pump problems.

Marc Marquez, who angered Aleix Espargaro by seeking a tow on Friday, then tucked in behind Miller to claim direct Qualifying 2 access this morning, repeated the tactic in qualifying, following Bagnaia for the opening half of the session to take fifth by the middle stages.

Marquez then shadowed Quartararo out of the pits for his final run, re-taking fifth on the grid between Miller and Johann Zarco, who topped Qualifying 1.

Joan Mir and Enea Bastianini brought out the yellow flags in the closing minutes, leaving them ninth and tenth respectively on the grid.

Alex Rins, tied on points with Quartararo for the world championship lead, failed to advance through Qualifying 1 and will start from 14th place, just behind Marquez's Repsol Honda team-mate Pol Espargaro.

Tech3 KTM's Raul Fernandez, ruled out of last Sunday's Portimao round due to a right-hand injury in qualifying, has also been declared unfit for Jerez.

Factory test riders Stefan Bradl (Honda) and Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia) are making wild-card card appearances this weekend, ahead of Monday's official test.

After third place for Aleix Espargaro in Portimao, one more podium finish for the RS-GP will mean Aprilia lose technical concessions.

Quartararo looked set for a comfortable victory at Jerez last season, only to fade from the lead with arm pump problems (for which he then underwent surgery) handing Ducati a one-two with Jack Miller and Francesco Bagnaia.

Franco Morbidelli completed the podium in third last year, taking what would be the final rostrum for Petronas Yamaha SRT.
