Former Manx Grand Prix winner Stephen McIlvenna has been killed following an incident during practice for the Manx Grand Prix.

The accident happened on Tuesday evening on the Mountain Mile section of the 37.73-mile circuit.

Mr McIlvenna was 39 and is from Randalstown in County Antrim in Northern Ireland.

A statement issued by the Manx Motor Cycle Club said: "Stephen McIlvenna was an experienced racer who first competed in the Manx Grand Prix in 2005. He won the 2009 Junior Manx Grand Prix. He also competed in the TT Races in 2010.

"The Manx Motor Cycle Club wish to pass on their deepest sympathy to Stephen's family and friends."

An investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.
