Newcastle are the new Speedway Premier League champions after a 42-30 win over Glasgow at Brough Park. Rain failed to dampen the celebrations as the Diamonds secured the Premier League title with a 42-30 win over on Monday night.

Glasgow had requested a track inspection and the verdict was to abandon the match, with the result standing at 42-30 to Newcastle who had a last-minute guest in the form of Jan Staechmann to replace the injured Jesper Olsen, with Chris Hunter taking the place of Grant MacDonald.

The title win is the culmination of a superb run of form from Newcastle who won their meetings in hand to catch, and eventually overhaul, long time leaders Hull. The real clincher was Newcastle's victory at Hull a couple of weeks ago.

Jubilant co-promoter George English said: "All credit to our team. They had a job to do and they all knew what they had to do. "It's the climax of an outstanding season of achievement by the lads. They thoroughly deserve this win which has brought so much satisfaction to Tyneside."

Newcastle now begin their bid to land the double when they face Edinburgh in the first leg of the end of season Young Shield competition. Should they progress, rivals Hull could be waiting for them if they beat Workington.

Hull promoter Eric Boocock said "Workington will be a very difficult test for us but we're confident we can get through, Our ultimate aim is to get all the way through to the final and face Newcastle - it would be a great way to end the season by facing the league champions with revenge on our mind!"
