The incident happened in heat one at Mariestad. Polish rider Tomasz Piszcz lost control and hit the fence but his bike bounced back into the track and hit the unlucky Kessler.

Frustrated Stoke co-promoter Dave Tattum said: "I only have scant details and understand that Robbie broke his arm and travelled back into Germany for hospital treatment."

Kessler joins Joe Cook on the Potters' injury list and until he is fit to resume racing, Stoke have the option of either a guest or use of the rider replacement facility.
