Sylvain Guintoli will not start the second World Superbike race at Phillip Island after sustaining a series of injuries in an accident during the opening encounter.

The Frenchman was making up ground after a poor start from third on the grid left him down in 18th position during the opening bends.

Battling his way up to tenth position in just four laps, Guintoli's progress would be brought to an abrupt halt on lap six when he crash at the final corner.

Taken to the medical centre, the Effenbert Liberty Ducati rider has reportedly suffered injuries to his hand, knee and shoulder blade, forcing him to sit out of the second race.

A disappointing start to the year for Guintoli, who finished every race in 2010 (his Magny-Cours exclusion included), he now has a month in which to get ready for the second round at Donington Park.
