Despite the fact that both the British rounds of the WTCC and the Silverstone Classic were taking place on the same weekend, the latest rounds of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park pulled in a record crowd.

More than 35,000 fans flocked to the Cheshire circuit over the two days, with 30,000 attending on Sunday alone, an increase of over 20 per cent on last year.

The figures are a record for a touring car event at any MotorSport Vision circuit since MSV took over Oulton Park, Brands Hatch, Snetterton and Cadwell Park in 2004 and also represent the biggest BTCC crowd at any venue for a decade.

"We are thrilled that the North West public has been able to enjoy a full weekend of the very best non-stop motor racing action," MSV chief executive Jonathan Palmer said. "The BTCC package really understands what the fans want and there is a real momentum developing around the championship."

BTCC series director Alan Gow was also delighted with the figures from the weekend.

"MSV has done a great job marketing this event and we are delighted to have broken all the records for attendances," he said. "It's been a great day of racing, so I'm sure everyone will be back next year when we come to Oulton Park at the end of May."
