Gavin Smith moved to the front during the second free practice session for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship opener at Brands Hatch, despite ending the session watching on the sidelines after an off in his Astra Sport Hatch.

The Irish driver posted a time of 49.236secs - the quickest time of the day so far for the BTCC runners - before sliding off into the gravel on the exit of Surtees bringing the red flags out and ending his session early.

Colin Turkington was second quickest in the first of the Team RAC MG ZS', with Jason Plato continuing to show an impressive turn of pace in the SEAT Leon as he was third quickest.

Matt Neal was fourth in the leading Integra ahead of Tom Chilton and Fabrizio Giovanardi, with Mike Jordan and Gordon Shedden rounding out the top eight.

After a clutch problem in the opening practice session, James Kaye made his first appearance of the season on track towards the end of the session in the new look Honda Civic Type-R of Synchro Motorsport, with technical problems this time hitting the SEAT of James Thompson. Mark Smith didn't take to the track in the In-Front Motorsport Alfa Romeo after of his first BTCC qualifying session later today.
