Vettel: Ferrari in control in the dry…

Sebastian Vettel says Ferrari were not quick or confident enough in the rain compared to Mercedes during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix but felt his team were ‘in control’ in dry conditions.

The German driver will line up fourth for the Hungaroring race after struggling to match the pace of Mercedes and his Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen in the soaking wet conditions in Q3.

Vettel says he was relaxed about his shot at pole position before the rain but accepts Ferrari lacks performance in the wet compared to his Formula 1 world title rivals.

“I don’t think there was an awful lot missing but we were not quicker enough,” Vettel said. “I think it was difficult in the wet and difficult to squeeze everything out of the car. I think the laps that I had were fine but just not quick enough.

“I think in the dry we were pretty much in control. It wasn’t dry this afternoon so it wasn’t meant to be but we will see tomorrow obviously as the race is long so we will see what we can do.

“In wet conditions we are not as confident as in the dry so there is some work to do and I think today it was a tricky session and it could have been anything. I think we managed it well until the end, we were missing a bit but that’s how it is.”

During the free practice sessions held in the dry in Hungary, Vettel topped FP2 and FP3 and had been tipped as strong favourite to repeat his victory at the circuit from 12 months ago.

Vettel trails Lewis Hamilton by 17 points in the F1 world drivers’ championship following his crash from the lead of the German Grand Prix last week.
