Formula 1 has announced it will return to the Nurburgring and Imola, as well as make a first-ever visit to Portimao, after it released its latest updates to the 2020 F1 schedule.

The trio of events take the place of Brazil, Mexico, the USA and Canada as F1 formally confirmed the fluid situation of COVID-19 means they cannot travel to North and South America for safety reasons. As such, the opening 13 events of the year will all be held on European soil.

The events will take place on October 9-11 (Nurburgring), October 23-25 (Portimao) and Imola (31 October – 1 November). It means the latter will be conducted over a condensed two-day schedule for the first time.

This will be the first time since 2013 F1 has travelled to the Eifel region of Germany to compete at the Nurburgring, while Imola has had an even longer absence having not hosted an F1 round since 2006.

Portimao, meanwhile, joins Mugello in making its debut on the F1 schedule and will take up the Portuguese Grand Prix title which hasn’t been used since the sport last visited the Iberian nation, back in 1996 at Estoril.

“We are pleased that we continue to make strong progress in finalising our plans for the 2020 season and are excited to welcome Nürburgring, Portimão and Imola to the revised calendar. We want to thank the promoters, the teams, and the FIA for their full support in our efforts to bring our fans exciting racing this season during an unprecedented time. We also want to pay tribute to our incredible partners in the Americas and look forward to being back with them next season when they will once again be able to thrill millions of fans around the world.”
