Nicky Hayden used a 'backyard' move to overtake MotoGP championship leader Jorge Lorenzo for third place on the very last lap of Sunday's Aragon MotoGP round.

The American dived for the inside though the second part of a slow right-left flick that leads onto the back straight. Parking his factory Ducati on the racing line, Lorenzo was forced to back off ion the exit, preventing him from re-passing Hayden into the last corner.

The result marked Hayden's first podium of the season, having finished in fourth place four times this season.

"It feels great to be back on the podium and I really enjoyed myself today," said Nicky. "The bike has been working really well all weekend and in the race I was able to get a good start and stay with Jorge.

"There wasn't really anywhere I could get a wheel in and over the last couple of laps he pushed hard to get away but I decided that fourth wasn't good enough for me today. I did a bit of a backyard move in the chicane over there and managed to hold him off to the line.

"It's nice to be on the podium. We'll try to do it again a few more times before the season's over!"

"Nicky was also fantastic because he kept up a strong pace throughout the race and never gave Lorenzo the chance to escape," added said team manager Vittoriano Guareschi. "He fought with him right to the end and came out with a podium."

Hayden's team-mate Casey Stoner won the race, marking Ducati's first win of the season and first double podium since 2007.
