During an astonishingly changeable session, in which the name at the top of the timesheets changed almost minute by minute in the last period, there were several examples of team-mates helping each other to set quick laps at the 5.036km circuit.

Thus Alstare Suzuki riders Stephane Chambon and Katsuaki Fujiwara set second and third best times respectively. Class rookie Simone Sanna, team-mate of van den Goorbergh, was overall fourth, taking his first front row start in Supersport, ahead of Alessio Corradi's Team Spadaro Italia Yamaha.

Ten Kate Honda rider Chris Vermeulen, who leads the championship by a handsome 38-point margin, went seventh quickest, and the factory Kawasaki of Fabien Foret scored eighth, and the last place on the second row.

Van den Goorbergh meanwhile set his first Supersport pole thanks to a best time of 1min 56.096secs.
