Jonathan Rea has confirmed his domination at Assen by topping the opening free practice session from local star Michael van der Mark while the session was briefly red flagged after Lorenzo Savadori went off at Turn 8.

The defending World Superbike champion has won the past seven consecutive races at the Dutch circuit and looks set to continue his run after an impressive FP1 with a best lap of 1m 35.662s to pull out over a quarter of a second on nearest rival Pata Yamaha’s van der Mark.

Xavi Fores has also started the race weekend strongly looking to bounce back from crashing out of race two at Aragon by taking third place on the times ahead of Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes and Aruba.it Racing Ducati’s Chaz Davies.

Althea BMW’s Loris Baz claimed sixth place ahead of Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha) and Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing Ducati) as Jordi Torres on the MV Agusta and Ducati’s Michael Ruben Rinaldi rounded out the top ten in the 40-minute FP1 session.

Leandro Mercado (Orelac Racing VerdNatura Kawasaki) held 11th spot in front of Savadori who tipped off midway through the session at Turn 8. The Milwaukee Aprilia rider was able to re-join track action after his crash but the session was briefly red flagged to clear debris off of the circuit from the Italian’s fall.

Jake Gagne ended the session 13th as the sole Red Bull Honda rider with teammate Leon Camier absent through injury after suffering three broken ribs and a chest injury in a crash at Aragon last weekend.
