Sandro Cortese will contest the 2020 World Superbike championship after agreeing a deal to race for Team Pedercini Kawasaki.

The German rider lost his ride at GRT Yamaha at the end of last season as the Italian team signed up Federico Caricasulo and Garrett Gerloff for the upcoming campaign.

Cortese has been standing in at Barni Racing Ducati on testing duty with Leon Camier recovering from a shoulder injury.

With Jordi Torres splitting from Pedercini, while the team also lost a key sponsor, Cortese will step in at the Italian squad to become its sole entry into this year’s World Superbike championship.

It will mark the two-time world champion’s debut on the Kawasaki ZX-10RR after making his World Superbike bow with GRT Yamaha last year.

“Lucio Pedercini, team manager, announces the agreement with Sandro Cortese for the ZX-10RR,” a team statement confirmed. “The agreement was signed today, closes the 2020 Superbike project of the team, that will line up with Cortese.”

Cortese claimed the 2012 Moto3 world title and following five consecutive seasons in Moto2 the German rider made the move to the World Supersport championship in 2018. The German stunned the series by charging to his second career world title in his rookie year which led to his promotion to the World Superbike championship.

The 2020 World Superbike season gets underway at Phillip Island on February 28-March 1.
