Andrew Irwin has topped a wet warm-up ahead of the penultimate round of the Bennetts British Superbike championship at Donington Park.

With heavy rain hitting the Leicestershire circuit overnight, the Honda rider surged to the top with a late 1m 40.949s in the 20-minute warm-up session in tricky conditions.

Despite having the BSB Showdown to focus on, Tarran Mackenzie maintained his charge in the wet for McAMS Yamaha in second place, albeit half a second slower than Irwin, with fellow top six title-fighter Josh Brookes taking third place for Be Wiser Ducati.

Christian Iddon claimed fourth place for Tyco BMW ahead of another BSB Showdown contender Peter Hickman in fifth place for Smiths Racing BMW, as Ben Currie continues to impress in difficult conditions for Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki in sixth place.

With Tommy Bridewell in seventh for Oxford Racing Ducati and BSB championship leader Scott Redding in eighth place for Be Wiser Ducati, having claimed pole position in the dry yesterday, it was a nightmare session for the final BSB Showdown member Danny Buchan who crashed unhurt.

That relegated the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki rider down to 24th place on the times, while Tyco BMW stand-in rider Taylor Mackenzie was another faller in the wet warm-up session.

Donington Park hosts two BSB races today before the final round of the season at Brands Hatch with a triple-header to decide the 2019 champion.

Redding takes a 14-point advantage into today’s races over Be Wiser Ducati team-mate Brookes with Bridewell in third but 51 points off the ex-MotoGP rider.
