2013 Indy 500: Pole Day Fast 9 shootout

Ed Carpenter clinched a surprise pole position for the 2013 Indianapolis 500 after setting a four-lap average of 228.762mph to hold on to the top spot ahead of a dazzling rookie performance from Carlos Munoz.

The pair will be joined on the front row of the grid by Munoz' Andretti Autosport team mate Marco Andretti, with a third member of the Andretti line-up following immediately behind in fourth place on the second row of the grid alongside Penske duo AJ Allmendinger and Will Power.

The remaining members of the two squads - Ryan Hunter-Reay, Helio Castroneves and James Hinchcliffe - rounded out the third row at the end of the 90 minute Fast 9 pole shootout which locks down those positions for the start of next weekend's Indy 500 on Sunday, May 26.

The pole shootout had been an all-Chevrolet affair with not a single Honda-powered car making it onto the front three rows for the start of the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500. The highest Honda on the current grid is 2011 pole winner Alex Tagliani in 11th.

Ten drivers still have to make new runs to set qualifying times on Sunday, with one driver set to miss out as 34 drivers in total go for 33 spots on the starting grid.
