MotoGP rookie Alex Rins in on his way back to Europe where he will undergo surgery on his broken wrist later this week.

The Suzuki rider, already recovering from an ankle fracture from a motocross training accident, suffered a double fracture of his lower left arm when he was one of eight riders to fall in a chaotic FP3 at COTA.

Rins will undergo surgery at the University Hospital Dexeus in Barcelona, after which a better idea of his recovery time will be known.

"It's been a very tough weekend," Rins said. "This is a special track where I have always found myself pretty comfortable, and I enjoyed riding a lot, but this grand prix instead has been complicated. We have paid very dearly for Saturday's fall. Now that we have accepted it, we can begin the recovery.

"The team is giving me exceptional support and I hope soon to start giving them back some joy so that we can all get rid of this bitter taste in our mouths. Now it's time to go back home, wait for the arm?s swelling to reduce, and undergo surgery. I'm not thinking about recovery time as much as coming back at 100%."

Rins is set to miss the first of his home Spanish MotoGP rounds at Jerez from May 5-7.

Team-mate Andrea Iannone scored his first points of the season with seventh in Sunday's race.
