Marc Marquez has produced a blistering pace to beat both factory Ducati riders and claim top spot after Friday practice at Aragon.

After the reigning MotoGP world champion had Aragon’s Turn 10 renamed in his honour, Marquez took the fight to the Ducati duo having seen the Italian manufacturer lockout the top four spots on the times from the morning session.

Using the soft tyres on his qualifying-style run, Marquez notched up a 1m 47.382s on his final fast lap to go top ahead of Jorge Lorenzo by 0.138s.

All Honda riders completed their long FP2 runs on both front and rear hard tyres, including Marquez, with Ducati riders looking ominous following the pace from FP1.

Lorenzo held off team-mate Andrea Dovizioso, who topped the morning session, with LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow remaining in close contention in fourth place just 0.027s behind his former Italian team-mate.

Andrea Iannone returned to his familiar top ten standing at the end of FP2 by jumping up to fifth place on the times for Suzuki, while team-mate Alex Rins missed the final third of the session with a technical issue which relegated him to 16th.

Danilo Petrucci dropped down to sixth place for Pramac Ducati but remained ahead of a resurgent Dani Pedrosa who appeared off the pace in the morning for Repsol Honda. The Spanish rider grabbed seventh place ahead of his penultimate home race before the Valencia finale.

Alvaro Bautista also produced his accustomed late surge on the Angel Nieto Ducati to take a provisional Q2 spot in eighth place which saw both Movistar Yamaha riders sneak into the top ten with Valentino Rossi narrowly ahead of team-mate Maverick Vinales.

Franco Morbidelli impressed once again on the Marc VDS Honda but just missed out in 11th place on the combined times, one-tenth of a second off Vinales, with Pramac Ducati’s Jack Miller dropping from third place in FP1 down to 12th.

Johann Zarco endured a poor FP2 for Monster Yamaha Tech 3 down in 17th place overall over four-tenths off the top ten.

Jordi Torres found significant improvements during the afternoon session to slash the gap to nearest rival Hafizh Syahrin down to 1.1s. The Spanish rider has replaced Christophe Ponsson as stand-in rider at Avintia Ducati with Tito Rabat still out injured with a broken leg sustained at Silverstone.
