The latest update on the condition of MotoGP team boss Fausto Gresini describes continued progress, 'albeit by little steps'.

The 59-old Italian, who contracted Covid in late December, remains on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of the Maggiore Carlo Alberto Pizzardi hospital in Bologna, where he has been since December 30.

Doctor Nicola Cilloni said: "Fausto Gresini's general clinical conditions are stable, but still linked to the persistence of respiratory insufficiency that binds him to respiratory support. He is awake, very cooperative and can do physiotherapy. The disease puts him to the test, but his willpower is always unmatched.”

Gresini was first admitted to hospital in Imola on December 27, before being moved to the specialist Covid ward in Bologna on December 30 and placed in a pharmacological coma to combat 'very low blood oxygen saturation levels' .

Once his condition had improved, Doctors began a slow awakening process from the coma on January 1. Gresini has made steady progress ever since and is now fully conscious, allowing a recent video call for his daughter's birthday and visit from his wife, although he continues to require the mechanical ventilator to ensure good blood oxygenation.

A double 125cc world champion as a rider, Gresini now fields teams in all three motorcycle grand prix class - MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 - plus the electric-bike MotoE World Cup.
