Eight riders crashed during the wet race, including race leader Marco Simoncelli, while Valentino Rossi brought down Casey Stoner in a failed overtake early in the race.

Dani Pedrosa will undergo shoulder surgery early next week to try and cure his left arm numbness.

Injured Suzuki rider Alvaro Bautista was replaced by John Hopkins for this event. Hopkins was making his first grand prix appearance since Valencia 2008.
