Garrett Gerloff third in WorldSBK test, a championship contender?

Garrett Gerloff was the standout rider - a statement that has been uttered many a time since his debut in the championship last season, during the only Official WorldSBK test this week in Barcelona.
Garrett Gerloff third in WorldSBK test, a championship contender?

The former MotoAmerica rider has enjoyed great success in WorldSBK over the last year, and looks to be pushing on in 2021 with another impressive two days of testing in Catalunya.

Gerloff finished both days of running third fastest behind only Jonathan Rea twice, Leon Haslam on day-one and Scott Redding on day-two.

The GRT Yamaha rider led for most of the second day and was only pipped in the final thirty minutes by Rea and Redding.

Unlike his rookie season, Gerloff will have the added advantage of circuit familiarity going into his second season as the calendar is very similar to that of 2020.

Speaking after his impressive showing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Gerloff said: "I really like this track, the new layout of Turn 10 - modified over the winter – gives it a nice flow.

"I feel very good with my Yamaha R1 and we have collected a lot of data that will be useful for us in the future.

"I am very happy because I feel strong both on the single lap and when it comes to the race pace. See you in Aragon."

Gerloff was on track for the second time in three weeks after an earlier Misano test alongside the Factory Yamaha and Ducati team’s.

But these two days of Official testing were a good opportunity to find out where riders and teams stand going into the new campaign with a full grid involved.
