Iker Lecuona Biography

After growing up and competing in his home nation of Spain, Iker Lecuona made his Moto2 debut in 2016 after replacing an injured Dominique Aegerter.

His first appearance came with the CarXpert Interwetten team at Silverstone before taking part in the following race in Misano. Lecuona completed the final four races of that season due to Aegerter being unable to return, and while he contested an extra seven races in 2017 (13) in total, it wasn’t until 2018 that he took part in his first full Moto2 season.

Following several top ten results, the first of which came at COTA (Circuit of the Americas) when he finished fifth, Lecuona ended the season in style by claiming a first podium at Valencia.

Although the 22 year-old failed to improve on his tally of one podium during his second full season (2019), Lecuona was promoted to MotoGP with the Tech 3 KTM team.

In what was a condensed season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lecuona found his rookie season to be tough after claiming just three top tens in 11 races.

Despite a slow start to year two in 2021, Lecuona began to show a decent amount of potential, so much so that rumours of a switch to the new RNF Yamaha team began to surface.

Lecuona took a career best MotoGP finish of sixth in the Austrian Grand Prix, however, with the above-mentioned Yamaha seat going the way of Andrea Dovizioso, toppled with the incredible performances by KTM protégés Remy Gardner and Raul Fernandez in Moto2, Lecuona subsequently lost his MotoGP ride for 2022.

Although the young Spaniard was keen to stay in the Grand Prix paddock, Lecuona was then announced at Team HRC for the 2022 WorldSBK season.

Despite injuries affecting Lecuona's debut season in WorldSBK, the Honda rider finished as the top rookie and was impressive for large parts of the season.

A pole position at Catalunya and podium in Assen were the highlights from his season as Lecuona and Honda look to bring themselves further into contention next season.
