F1: Ricciardo hits Top Gear with lap record

Daniel Ricciardo smashes the Top Gear 'Formula 1 Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' lap record, beating former time chart topper Lewis Hamilton by nearly a second

Daniel Ricciardo will have the bragging rights when he returns to the Formula 1 paddock after topping the time sheets on BBC's Top Gear Formula 1 Star in a Reasonably Priced Car challenge.

The 25-year-old Australian took to Top Gear's Dunsfold airfield track and shattered Lewis Hamilton's leading time of 1m 42.9s by nearly a second, clocking a 1m 42.1s lap.

The Red Bull driver also spoke of his delight of totally dominating his former team-mate Sebastian Vettel in his first season at the team. Ricciardo was the only non-Mercedes driver to win a Grand Prix last season, with three victories at Canada, Hungary and Spa respectively, and finished a huge 71 points ahead of the four-time World Champion.

Ricciardo was blown away at his achievement and compared his delight at his Top Gear success to his first F1 Grand Prix victory.

He said: "I feel better. This is how I felt after Canada because there I didn't know what to say either."
