2017 in review: A lack of development due to continued financial struggles and a year-old Ferrari engine hampered Sauber as it was resigned to its worst-ever finish in the sport,  propping up the constructors’ standings in 10th place. Pascal Wehrlein scored five points - all the team managed - but it was not enough to keep his place on the grid for 2018.

What’s changed for 2018? Sauber received a huge boost heading into the new season, having secured Alfa Romeo as a title sponsor and current-spec Ferrari engines. The team will also field promising youngster Charles Leclerc, who is the reigning Formula 2 champion.

Key man - Charles Leclerc enters a big year in his career. The opportunity to impress Ferrari in the hope of securing a seat at the Scuderia - possibly in place of Kimi Raikkonen - should provide the Monagasque driver with plenty of motivation. He demonstrated his impressive talent across a dominant F2 title-winning campaign in 2017, ultimately leading to what promises to be a fascinating intra-team battle between himself and team regular Marcus Ericsson.
