Maverick Vinales says he will examine how Fabio Quartararo rides his Petronas Yamaha to see where he can find instant gains having seen the MotoGP rookie begin to consistently outperform his fellow Yamaha riders.

The Monster Yamaha rider was unable to match the early race pace of Quartararo and Marc Marquez which denied him the opportunity to fight for victory in the closing laps at the Thailand MotoGP.

With Quartararo finishing as leading Yamaha in three of the past fives races, despite being slightly handicapped by fewer maximum RPM, it has led to Vinales paying credit to the French rider and is eager to see if he can learn anything from Quartararo’s setup and riding style with the M1 after team-mate Valentino Rossi was spotted following the French rider during practice at the Chang International Circuit.

“He is doing a really good job and is understanding the bike very well and is riding superbly,” Vinales said after the Thailand MotoGP. “We have to understand how he rides because we can improve a lot on the bike and we will see.

“They [Petronas Yamaha] did a great job and I think they made a better setup than us so we need to understand what they did well and try to improve in Japan.

“I like Motegi a lot, it is a track that I always like to push at to be fast. It will be good because it is a track where normally I am really fast.

“Last year it was a difficult race when I was at a point where I didn’t feel good with the bike but now I feel incredible with the bike, I can push so much for a good lap time, so we will see.”

Vinales remains the leading Yamaha in the overall MotoGP world championship having moved up to fourth place in the standings thanks to his podium in Buriram.

The Spanish rider has an 18-point gap over team-mate Rossi while Quartararo is a further two points behind the nine-time world champion with four rounds to go.
