MotoGP rookie Marc Marquez takes his third pole position of the year, while Valentino Rossi claims his first front row start since 2010. Aleix Esparagaro to start fifth on his privateer CRT bike.

MotoGP championship leader Dani Pedrosa missed qualifying after his huge morning highside but will be able to start from twelfth on the grid if declared fit.

Title rival Jorge Lorenzo, who broke his collarbone at Assen - but returned to claim fifth in the race - has been forced to withdraw from the German round after re-damaging his collarbone on Friday.

Andrea Iannone, who fell heavily in Free Practice 4, did not return for Qualifying 1 after dislocating his right shoulder.

Home star Stefan Bradl fell halfway through Qualifying 2 but was able to continue.

Hiroshi Aoyama, injured at Catalunya, is returning to action while Pramac's Ben Spies continues to be side-lined and is again replaced by Ducati test rider Michele Pirro.
